Antioxidants have the ability to trap free radicals which can initiate
degenerative disease. Antioxidant compounds like the flavonoids found
in chocolate scavenge free radicals and inhibit the mechanisms that lead
to damage to our cells especially through oxidization. According to studies
at UCSF the flavonoids contribute to “increased blood flow, less platelet
stickiness and clotting and reduced bad cholesterol.” Another benefit of
flavonoid rich chocolate according to results of German research, is smoother
and moister skin and less damage under UV exposure.
Magnesium is beneficial for the Cardiovascular System and reduces
hypertension. Magnesium deficiency is linked to diabetes and joint problems.
Adding magnesium to the diet of pre-menstrual sufferers has proven to increase
progesterone levels helping to alleviate mood swings.
Research has suggested that chocolate may “boost your memory, attention
span, reaction time, and problem solving skills” by increasing blood flow
to the brain.
Chocolate contains small amounts of the chemical phenylethylamine which
elevates mood. This chemical is associated with emotions of love and joy
and our brain naturally produces it. Chocolate is also shown to increase
serotonin, our brains anti-depressant, and endorphins. Endorphins create
the euphoria associated with peak physical exertion. The experience at
Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge blends the finest in chocolates with
a contemporary art environment creating joy for all the senses.
